At that point you will be able to stream movies and TV episodes to you iPad/iPhone, Wii or MAC/PC. Is is expected that the new AppleTV2 will also support Netflix streaming in Canada when it ship at the end of the month of September.

Once your trial is ended you will be charged 7.99$/month for the membership. This is less than 100$ per year to watch movies and TV shows… less than one month of my current cable bill!

Mind you, the selection is not the most recent. You won’t find blockbusters movie when they are released. You will have to wait a fair bit before you can stream them via Netflix.

There is also no french section of the web site. This might limit the market penetration in Quebec where most of the population is french speaking. This will seriously limit my familly’s ability to use the service as my kisd only speak french and will not benefit from the familly section for now.

Hopefully Netflix will add some french titles over time.

I will give the service a more thorough try tonight and will report on my experience with it.

Applidium now has to work hard and quick on improving the product to make it truely usefull. I fear that in it’s current form those 125,000 will have a low retention rate. I, for one, will not use the application until some major changes are made and new features added.

The Good:

It will play those old AVI of mine and those TV Episode AVI that I download once in a while when I miss a recording on my DVR.

The Bad:

The application feel very beta. This is understandable as the team wanted to produce a simple application and see if Apple would approve before investing major amount of time in something that might now get approved.

Playback is a little blocky and even stutters at times.

Sound level is low and hard to listen to.

There is no easy way to delete files

The video selection screen is awkward and does not allow to sort in any way.

No streaming for now

Ackward interface to load video via iTunes (thank’s Apple)

Conclusion:

For now I will stick with playing those AVI using AirVideo real time transcoding or simply use Handbrake to permanently convert the files to mp4 friendly files. I commend the team for porting VLC to the iPad but for now I don’t see myself using it.

After 2 weeks of review, VLC for the iPad is now available on the AppStore! The release date is set to Tuesday, Sept. 21, so depending on your timezone, it should be available pretty soon.

For instance, it’s already available in New-Zealand! Just follow this iTunes link that should become active as soon as the app reaches your store.

For the technically-inclined of you, the sources are being uploaded to videolan.org, and should be made available before the end of the day.

Also, Applidium got many questions regarding an iPhone version. It’s in the works! Applidium started with the iPad, but an iPhone and iPod version is coming.

UPDATE:

Wired just published a review of the application. Look very promising.

——

This short youtube video show how the iPad VLC application can nativelly play XVID, DIVX, etc video format on the iPad.

The application look fast and responsive. The UI is not up to my taste with the oversized video thumbnails but I am sure it will get better over time (if it is ever approved in the App Store). Given the published guidelines yesterday I don’t see why it would not be the case.

VLC for the iPad will allow owners of the tablet to watch the non h264 compressed video on the platform. This will be a welcomed change for people who might have built of library of movies compressed in the older video formats.

Merging VLC for the iPad and AirVideo would provide the dream streaming video application. No more need to transcode non h.264 video to watch over WiFi. Only transcoding when streaming over 3G would be necessary.

Samsung today released a teaser video for their upcoming “Galaxy Tab” touch-screen tablet device. Samsung’s latest entry into the tablet market will feature a 7 inch AMOLED display, video calling take that, iPad!, Android 2.2 Froyo, e-reading, and HD movie playback. The device looks very interesting in the promotional teaser, and is reportedly lighter than the iPad according to a first-hand account.

The device will be officially unveiled at a conference in Berlin on September 2, 2010. Time will tell if this is another JooJoo Fail or a true-iPad competitor.
