Next project: VPN Hacktivator

Following the success of AirPrint Hacktivator I am thinking of writing another little Hacktivator application to help with the activation of the OS X dormant VPN capabilities.

Unknown to most users OS X contains all the engines needed to allow iPhones/iPads/iPod Touch to establish a VPN connection with your Mac back home… the only problem is that multiple files have to be created and services started to make it work.  This is essentially what the OS X Server does with those same files via the provided GUI.

As you might guess this GUI is missing from OS X “user” edition.  Here is where VPN Hacktivator will come handy.  It will offer a minimalistic way of activating the dormant capabilities.  I expect the 1st release to be fairly simple.  Just enough to get a VPN connection possible via PPTP to your Mac using an existing Mac user account name.  Future release should be able to add more functionality/options.

Steve Jobs: AirPlay Video Streaming Coming to Safari and Third-Party Apps in 2011

Mac Rumors:  Steve Jobs stated in an email reply that AirVideo Streaming is coming in 2011 for Safari and third-party applications.

This is a welcomed news as many where left wondering if Apple had plans to enable AirVideo for third-party applications through an Xcode update.

The current AirVideo API are private and can’t be used by non Apple developers.

NetBookInstaller 0.8.5 Preview Released

NetbookInstaller 0.8.5pre is now officially released. There will not be a final release of NBI 0.8.4. This is a preview / prerelease of the changes in store for 0.8.5, there are bound to be numerous bugs. Once bugs reported to Meklort are worked out + features finalized, he will release a 0.8.5 RC and go from there.

This version is very experimental and will most likely break things that are working. There are a few major changes in this version that have not been very well tested, so there may be regressions issues. The main highlights include that NetbookInstaller and NetbookBootMaker have been merged into one application. As far as Meklort can tell, there shouldnt be any issues with this.

AirPrint Hacktivator v1.7

I rewrote most of the hack part of AirPrint Hacktivator so that only one line need to be added to the apple.types file.

This ensure that no Apple files need to be re-distributed in AirPrint Hacktivator.  The end result should be the same as versions 1.0-1.6: printing from your 4.2.1+ iOS devices to an OSX 10.6.5 shared [...]

AirPlay over Apple’s AirVideo to Apple TV2 demo

This morning, after working out AirPlay video streaming details with Steven Troughton Smith, I decided to give Matej Knopp a call. His name may not ring a bell, but hes the developer of the awesome Air Video application. Air Video, which sells on the App Store for just three dollars, allows you to watch [...]

AirPrint Hacktivator v1.6

I just made a slightly better looking version of AriPrint Hacktivator:

I now use the familiar iOS style button to turn AirPrint Hack ON or OFF.  There is also a status light and text indicator about what the current state of AirPrint is on the system.

Same 3 files copy under the hood.  I must say I have [...]

AirPrint Hacktivator 1.5 now available

While trying to find out what makes the printer sharing ticking during a remove and add operation I noticed that it was necessary to restart cupsd to make the remove/add/share action work. Rebooting the Mac will essentially restart cupsd and then removing/adding/sharing printers will result in them showing in iOS 4.2 GM devices.  But rebooting is [...]
