aTV Flash (black) beta now available (Mac only for now)

It is finally here, aTV Flash (black) beta was just released. There are multiple ways to get your hands on the fresh beta:

1. Existing aTV Flash users can download it for free

2. Pre-Order for aTV Flash (black) is now open at an introductory price of $19.95. Once aTV Flash is out of beta the price will jump to $29.95

3. Registered beta users will soon receive an invitation with instructions on how to get a copy of the beta version.

What is included in this beta you ask?

Surf the Web – Experience the web in all its glory and stream HTML5 video from many popular sites (note: not all HTML5 sites supported yet).
Discover New Music – Find new artists you’ll love by accessing Last.fm radio stations, artist bios and slideshows.
Plex Client – Stream media from Plex Server running on your Mac.
Info on Demand - Keep track of current weather and news feeds on your AppleTV.
One-click Updates - Install, remove or update plugins in a snap through the native AppleTV interface.

Obviously this is just the beginning. Future beta release are expected to add:

Go Beyond iTunes – Enable playback of additional media formats.
Access Media Anywhere – Stream media from most NAS devices.
Much, much more…

For now aTV flash (black) only work on Apple TV2 running iOS 4.1 (the original release). If you want to use AirVideo (iOS 4.2.1) along with aTV flash you will have to wait a bit longer for a jailbreak solution to be released and a supporting version of aTV flash.

The installation goes a bit like this:

1. Jailbreak your Apple TV2 using version 4.1.2: PwnageTool_4.1.2.dmg and go through the 1st time setup.

2. Download aTV Flash (black), open the DMG and copy the aTV Flash application to the Applications folder:

3. Run the application, target your jailbroken Apple TV and enjoy.

For now there is only a Mac version of the application available. FireCore are saying that a Windows version is coming soon.

I will report back when I receive the beta invitation and I get a chance to install aTV Flash (black) on my Apple TV2.

Cydia hack enables Airplay in all apps

A new hack for jailbroken iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch now allow AirVideo from all applications making use of the standard Apple iOS media player.

The hack was created by a developer named Zone-MR.

AirPrint Hacktivator v1.7

I rewrote most of the hack part of AirPrint Hacktivator so that only one line need to be added to the apple.types file.

This ensure that no Apple files need to be re-distributed in AirPrint Hacktivator. The end result should be the same as versions 1.0-1.6: printing from your 4.2.1+ iOS devices to an OSX 10.6.5 shared printer.

This application is free way to activate AirPrint on OSX 10.6.5. The application is easy to use and won’t require you to manually modify your system files.

I tested this new version and all seem to be fine on my end. Let me know if you have issues with it.

aTV flash for Apple TV2 update

fireCore just published some news regarding the development status of the aTV flash application for jailbroken Apple TV2.

The installer, and last.fm portion are ready for beta. The new Apple TV2 iOS 4.2.1 will require some major ajustment but nothing too big.

The Couch Surfer is 80% there and is now able to play HTML5 video. You can see a short demo below:

CODEC/NAS streaming is 35% done. At the moment the development team has been able to play non iTunes files like AVI, MKV and WMV.

The one thing needed right now is an update to ba able to jailbreak the new version of the Apple TV.

AirPrint Hacktivator v1.6

I just made a slightly better looking version of AriPrint Hacktivator:

I now use the familiar iOS style button to turn AirPrint Hack ON or OFF. There is also a status light and text indicator about what the current state of AirPrint is on the system.

Same 3 files copy under the hood. I must say I have a blast learning AppleScriptObjC at the same time. It’s a pretty powerful language that is easy to learn.

AirPrint Hacktivator 1.5 now available

While trying to find out what makes the printer sharing ticking during a remove and add operation I noticed that it was necessary to restart cupsd to make the remove/add/share action work. Rebooting the Mac will essentially restart cupsd and then removing/adding/sharing printers will result in them showing in iOS 4.2 GM devices. But rebooting is a pain and not necessary…

So the new version on AirPrintHacktivator will now “restart” the cupsd process after hacktivating or “de hacktivating” AirPrint.

This should help resolve the issues some people have seen when Printers would not show up after removing/adding/sharing them back in the System Preferences.

aTV Flash beta for Apple TV2 almost ready to be released

fire CORE, the companie behind aTV Flash for 1st gen Apple TV is about to release the 1st beta for the Apple TV2.

aTV Flash installer will communicates directly with the AppleTV (no wires or USB drives required) and allows aTV Flash (black) to be installed onto the AppleTV in just minutes. A windows version of the installer will be available at a later date.

Once installed additional apps (and updates) can be installed from the newly added ‘Maintenance’ item.

A web browser called “Couch Surfer” is also planned for the 1st beta release as can be seen in the live demo below (sorry about the youtube copy… for some reasons vimeo embeds won’t stick in wordpress):

The last component part of the 1st beta will be Last.fm client. A short demo can be seen below.

Video playback is not something that will be part in the 1st beta. fire Core is hoping to add video playback in subsequent beta release.

AirPrint Hacktivator 1.4

Another day, another improved version of the tool. This time I added a function to open “Print and Fax” System Preference pane for you. No more forgetting to Remove and Add the printer.

The dialog box shown at the end of Hacktivation now tell you to remember to share the printer.

Apple teases iTunes event

Visit apple.com this morning and you will be greeted with the above screen.

Apple will announce something memorable tomorrow about iTunes. Could this be iTunes streaming? Cloud based iTunes… you library in the cloud? Apple just built a massive Data Center and some have speculated that it might have to do with iTunes in the cloud.

Maybe this will confirm the rumor… but “That you will never forget.” statement better be paired with something BIG! I mean, this better be a game changer… and not just the Beatles coming to iTunes.

I am on a roll. I wanted to learn a bit more about AppleScriptObjC and make the application smarter at the same time. I have modified the application code to only show the appropriate option to either Hacktivate or “De Hacktivate” AirPrint.

This should make things easier for the users.
