Engadget reported that, to their surprise, the Win 7 HP Slate is still kicking. HP officially confirmed this morning that the product is still very much in the works. The outfits not sharing much, but a spokesperson from its Personal Systems group did tell us that theyre “in customer evaluations now and will make a determination soon on the next steps.”

You may recall that HP and Microsoft announced the product at CES and ever since it’s survival was under question. It is still no sealed as dead yet… but I have my reservation as to what kind of success such a tablet will have given that it runs Windows 7. The secret sauce of the iPad is iOS 4… a lean and mean OS made for touch devices. Windows 7 is far from lean… but it is for sure mean

There is a lot of interesting things going on out there. 1st, the iPad just got released in the wild… the next thing you know Microsoft is preparing some announcement on April 12 2010… something about sharing… I wonder what this might be… Maybe something to fight the iPad?

Then the next thing you know Apple announce a preview of the iPhone OS 4.0 for this Thursday (April 8th 2010). This is getting interesting… and what comes just after…

HP is showing off what the HP Slate will be like. Making it clear that it will have a fron facing camera and support USB connections (Apple USB cable), SDHC cards and video out via a docking station.

There is a war about to take place out there… and the two sides are Apple with the iPad and the future iPhone OS 4.0 vs Microsoft and the HP Slate. I am all for such competition. This keep everyone on their toes and benefit the end users.

Microsoft and HP are certainly trying to get the attention away from the iPad… and I think they will succeed in some respect if the HP Slate promo is as interesting as what is shown in the video.

On the other hand Apple is trying to keep the attention on what else is to come for iPhone users and most certainly iPad users… something special in the OS4 for the devices. One thing for sure is that it will be hard to compensate for the lack of camera on the iPad… but they may come out with a front facing camera on the next gen iPhone… as supported by some leaked iPhone 4th gen casing pictures.

Bring it on!

Acer’s Android netbook has been regular grist for the rumor-mill, with delays tipped, buyer apathy prediced, along with vehement denials from the company themselves. So it’s with no small amount of interest that we read one of the first reviews of the Acer Aspire One D250 Android – as the netbook appears to have been labelled – courtesy of ePrice. They found the AOD250 to be “semi-finished”, with Android perhaps unsurprisingly causing many of the issues.

The AOD250 dual-boots between Windows XP and Android, and at least that process is relatively straightforward. Twin power buttons might have been neat, but in fact you get a reboot dialog – which you can see in the gallery below – offering a choice of Microsoft’s or the open-source OS. Booting into Android took a mere 20 seconds, while shut-downs were almost instantaneous; however it seems that Acer have done little to rework Android to the larger netbook display.

Realizing that the world of Netbook and ultraportable has gone missing a DVD reader Microsoft is thinkering with the idea of selling Windows 7 installation on USB Thumb Drive media.

It is about time Microsoft (and I hope Apple) realise that the world is evolving and that DVD are getting useless! Why don’t they simply allow you to buy the right to download and install a new copy of the OS Installation on your own USB key!

This is what Meklort and I have been doing for OSX Installation on Netbook for close to a year. Forget the DVD, think USB key!

This would save the planet from all those DVD media that we keep scratching, loosing. You loose the USB key… fine, simply go online and use you purchased right to download a new copy and install that on your new 64GB USB key!

We don’t need dedicated key per OS. Simply download the OS Installer you need to “a” USB key, install with it and then format that key for something else.

Maybe BestBuy and other retailers could offer their clients to install various OS version on USB Key for a minimal charge (or even for free). This would prevent folks from downloading them via the internet and storing them on their HD. Simply walk to BestBuy, go at the OS imaging station and put the OS on your Thumb Drive.

Simple, practical, every one win.
