Netflix.ca is now open for business. You can now subscribe to a 1 month trial membership account and enjoy streaming movies. Be warned that you will need to provide a valid canadian credit card or Paypal account to complete the process.

At that point you will be able to stream movies and TV episodes to you iPad/iPhone, Wii or MAC/PC. Is is expected that the new AppleTV2 will also support Netflix streaming in Canada when it ship at the end of the month of September.

Once your trial is ended you will be charged 7.99$/month for the membership. This is less than 100$ per year to watch movies and TV shows… less than one month of my current cable bill!

Mind you, the selection is not the most recent. You won’t find blockbusters movie when they are released. You will have to wait a fair bit before you can stream them via Netflix.

There is also no french section of the web site. This might limit the market penetration in Quebec where most of the population is french speaking. This will seriously limit my familly’s ability to use the service as my kisd only speak french and will not benefit from the familly section for now.

Hopefully Netflix will add some french titles over time.

I will give the service a more thorough try tonight and will report on my experience with it.

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”

Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail.

Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. We worked hard to make these rates really cheap (see comparison table) with calls to the U.K., France, Germany, China, Japan—and many more countries—for as little as $0.02 per minute.

Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name.

Still, it’s expansion, right? It’s also worth noting that Canadian customers will only be able to subscribe to the Web offering, but still won’t be able to get Netflix DVDs via the email. It’s the first time that Netflix has offered a streaming-only service. Netflix’ release doesn’t have many other specifics, like price, the size of the catalog that the company will offer, or the exact date it will be available.

Apparently the service won’t be of any use to American subscribers who visit their neighbors up north. Blame licensing restrictions, per usual.

Irrespective of Apple policy, we know that many of our readers already purchased a US iPad for use — gasp — outside of the United States. With favorable exchange rates and an early US launch really, who could blame you? But after notifying your local customs office and paying your government tithe, the very next thing you probably did was notice that you couldn’t buy iPad apps from your local iTunes app store. Now you can, at least if the sudden deluge of tweets and tips from Dutch, UK, German, Swiss and Canadian (like me) iPad owners now hitting Engadget inbox is any indication. Go ahead, give it a go and let us know the results in comments.

The app store is most certainly available in Canada now as I was able to install a new iPad application through it. Was is curious is the absense of the iBook application from the Canadian app store. Using the US iBook application with a Canadian iTunes account will lead to an empty iBook store… so it certainly is not ready yet. I will keep an eye an it and report when it becomes available.

“Manufacturers had better start building more efficient applications and more efficient services. There is no real way to get around this,” “If we dont start conserving that bandwidth, in the next few years we are going to run into a capacity crunch. You are already experiencing the capacity crunch in the United States.”

The problem is not the devices! The problem is the greedy carriers that keep thinking 20 years back when there was no data to speak of, when voice was king and data was confined to floppy disks.

He should actually speak about the carriers and tell them to get up from their precious ass and do something about the lack of transport on their wireless networks. Invest more in technology instead of crippling the users phone features. Maybe people would be more inclined to spend money with them.

See, data has escaped and there is no putting this thing in the bottle. The iPads of the work will consume wireless bandwidth like there is no tomorrow.

Final UPDATE:

OK, move on, this is a fake… bleu screen with Adobe After effect applied. Looked good none the less.

UPDATE 1:

I downloaded the HD version of the video (1st one is 720P and 2nd 1080p) and studied them frame by frame and I must say that the second video appear to show the real deal. You can clearly see the depth of the home button as the tablet move, the shadow of the finger on the glass above the UI, etc, etc.

This is quite possibly the actual iSlate (or wathever name it will have).

UPDATE 2:

The first video appear to be from a prototype with no home button… strange. The second video clearly show the home button.

Here is a screen grab from 1st video:

and one from the 2nd video:

UPDATE 3:

Notice how the screen look mate, quite a difference from the standard iPhone screen… this is getting more and more interesting. One possibility for the difference between the prototype is that the 1st one contain an accelerometer and the second does not? Not sure what is going on… I can’t say for sure if both vids where taken the same day… what make me think they where not is the different native resolution of the youtube mp4 videos… 720p for 1st one vs 1080p for second one…

UPDATE 4:

I tracked the original post on the french web site…

Vid 1

Vid 2

Some of the comments point to the UK IKEA app as being shown in the 1st vid… but in a form that is unknown on the iPhone (much larger screen). People also reported the presence of some old newton docs, papers, and various other apple docs on the desk of the presenter… possibly pointing to an apple developer as the source.

—–

I let you decide if this is real or fake. None the less those look really cool and if they are fake I tip my hat to the team that made them!

And the second one:

Reading about the internet connection quality on a cruise ship I realised that I will need to do something about live web mail access if I want to escape from the boat with my mind and some cash… internet access charges are very high for very low throughput and reliability… try getting 2000 guest to share a 1mbps link and you get the picture.

So I decided to prep my mini with a copy of Google Chrome and activate offline mode. It was rather painless and should provide for quick offline email writing and retreiving when I chose to.
