The PLEX client rely on a server side (read Mac) component that act as a transcoding helper for all video served to the iOS devices. In some ways it is doing a similar job as the iPhone and iPad AirVideo server side application does… but in a much fancier Apple TV friendly way.

PLEX on the Apple TV is also freeing you from the shackles of iTunes by leveraging the PLEX Media Center running on your Mac. This is nice since right now, to play any personal video library, you need to interface via iTunes… and this is kind of annoying.

For the curious out there here is a short video of PLEX client for Apple TV2 in action:

The Software so far is nothing more than a proof of concept, which isn’t tested at all. However there are some known issues:

“Local Servers” screen does only update when you press the up or down button on your remote

Larger Sections timeout while they are loaded and do never show up

Only Video playback is working (no music files, no images, no App-Management)

For now all video files are forced to be re-encoded. Let’s hope that PLEX can address this and allow to stream iOS compliant files directly to the ATV2 in a way similar to what Airvideo does. Maybe the folks doing Airvideo could contribute a little of their knowhow to this project… or come up with their own client for the ATV2.

Anyway, this is looking really good for the future of Apple TV2 applications. Let’s hope that Apple’s next ATV2 iOS upgrade won’t throw too much of a monkey wrench to the JB community.

UPDATE:

Wired just published a review of the application. Look very promising.

——

This short youtube video show how the iPad VLC application can nativelly play XVID, DIVX, etc video format on the iPad.

The application look fast and responsive. The UI is not up to my taste with the oversized video thumbnails but I am sure it will get better over time (if it is ever approved in the App Store). Given the published guidelines yesterday I don’t see why it would not be the case.

VLC for the iPad will allow owners of the tablet to watch the non h264 compressed video on the platform. This will be a welcomed change for people who might have built of library of movies compressed in the older video formats.

Merging VLC for the iPad and AirVideo would provide the dream streaming video application. No more need to transcode non h.264 video to watch over WiFi. Only transcoding when streaming over 3G would be necessary.

The iPad demand in the US is so huge that Apple had to make a difficult decision… delay the international sales of the device. This is really sad as I was looking forward to get my hands on the device at the end of the month. The good news is that with great sales comes great applications. A lot of people where predicting that the iPad would not sell very well. They have been proven wrong.

Find below a copy of the Apple press release:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad(TM). We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason–the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

There you have it, no iPad for you in April International customers!

Final UPDATE:

OK, move on, this is a fake… bleu screen with Adobe After effect applied. Looked good none the less.

UPDATE 1:

I downloaded the HD version of the video (1st one is 720P and 2nd 1080p) and studied them frame by frame and I must say that the second video appear to show the real deal. You can clearly see the depth of the home button as the tablet move, the shadow of the finger on the glass above the UI, etc, etc.

This is quite possibly the actual iSlate (or wathever name it will have).

UPDATE 2:

The first video appear to be from a prototype with no home button… strange. The second video clearly show the home button.

Here is a screen grab from 1st video:

and one from the 2nd video:

UPDATE 3:

Notice how the screen look mate, quite a difference from the standard iPhone screen… this is getting more and more interesting. One possibility for the difference between the prototype is that the 1st one contain an accelerometer and the second does not? Not sure what is going on… I can’t say for sure if both vids where taken the same day… what make me think they where not is the different native resolution of the youtube mp4 videos… 720p for 1st one vs 1080p for second one…

UPDATE 4:

I tracked the original post on the french web site…

Vid 1

Vid 2

Some of the comments point to the UK IKEA app as being shown in the 1st vid… but in a form that is unknown on the iPhone (much larger screen). People also reported the presence of some old newton docs, papers, and various other apple docs on the desk of the presenter… possibly pointing to an apple developer as the source.

—–

I let you decide if this is real or fake. None the less those look really cool and if they are fake I tip my hat to the team that made them!

And the second one:

The new model will be the first to leverage Cisco’s networking technology since it bought Pure Digital in a multi-million dollar deal in early 2009.

Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but we’ve been informed by a Cisco spokesperson that the new model will feature “a large screen that slides to reveal the record and menu buttons underneath” allowing users to see what is going on when they are recording video.

The screen itself won’t be touchscreen however, presumably in an attempt to keep costs down.

Owners of the new pocket video camcorder will be able to record video footage and then upload it straight from the camcorder over Wi-Fi networks both private and public, a feature currently being offered in some DSLRs.

SanDisk Corporation, today introduced the fastest 32-gigabyte (GB)1 SDHC™ card on the market. The 32GB SanDisk Extreme® SDHC™ card at up to 30 megabytes per second (MB/s)2 read and write speeds combines industry-leading performance with massive storage capacity, helping digital photography enthusiasts utilize the advanced features of today’s DSLR cameras.

The 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card adheres to the SD Association’s new Class 10 specification, which exceeds requirement for today’s high definition (AVCHD) video recording. The card offers a sustained write speed fast enough to ensure high-definition video recording and capacity capable of storing 160 minutes of full HD 1920×1080 pixels at 24Mb/s data transfer rate.

A memory card’s write speed plays a crucial role in the overall system of the camera when taking pictures in rapid succession. If a card cannot process data quickly enough then the burst mode shooting may pause unexpectedly as the card catches up to the camera. Burst mode bottlenecks can lead to missing “the” shot, especially at sporting or other fast-motion events. The SanDisk Extreme SDHC card offers maximum data-transfer rates, giving consumers a memory card fast enough to unlock the full capabilities of their DSLRs.
